Dr. David Turner, a GP in Hertfordshire, has experienced a surge in online appointment requests since the new system was implemented, with a constant stream of queries to sift through. While the intention behind the online booking system was to streamline the process and reduce the rush at 08:00 to get through on the phone lines, the increased administrative workload for doctors has resulted in fewer overall appointments being offered.
The British Medical Association has raised concerns about the overwhelming workload that GPs are facing due to the new system, potentially putting patients at risk. Patients, on the other hand, have mixed feelings about the online booking system. Some like Jo, a former hospital finance director from Kent, have struggled to secure appointments through the online system, highlighting the ongoing issue of the lack of available slots. Jo also expressed dissatisfaction with the sometimes dismissive behavior of staff during appointments, emphasizing the importance of empathy in healthcare interactions.
Rakesh from Southampton echoes Jo’s sentiments, stating that booking appointments online has not made it any easier to secure a slot to see a GP. Despite the profitability of GP practices, Rakesh believes that more should be done to improve access to healthcare services, especially for patients with regular health needs. The dissatisfaction with GP services is reflected in the declining satisfaction levels among patients, as indicated by the British Social Attitudes survey.
