As a young child, Sara Wahedi fled Afghanistan with her mother and brother to seek refuge in Buffalo, New York, escaping the oppressive regime of the Taliban. Tasked with checking a bulletin board for their asylum interview, Sara’s sense of responsibility was ingrained from a tender age. Witnessing her mother’s sacrifice and resilience in starting a new life in North America shaped Sara’s character early on.
Growing up in Canada, Wahedi worked with refugee support organizations, questioning her own identity as she strived to integrate into a new culture while honoring her roots. An internship opportunity in Afghanistan in 2017 led her to stay and work as a policy aide for the Afghan government, contributing to the country’s development alongside other passionate youth. However, the constant threat of terror attacks and violence in Kabul left a lasting impact on Sara.
After experiencing the horrors of terror attacks firsthand, Wahedi was inspired to create the Ehtesab app, focusing on accountability and transparency to keep Afghans informed and safe during emergencies. Despite the app’s eventual closure due to safety concerns during the Taliban’s takeover in 2021, Sara remains committed to using technology for positive change. Currently studying at the University of Oxford, she continues her work through her startup Civaam, providing essential services discreetly in crisis regions.
Wahedi’s ultimate goal is to see a free and safe Afghanistan for all its citizens. She draws inspiration from the resilient Afghan women defying oppressive laws daily and her friend managing underground schools in the country. Despite the challenges, Sara remains hopeful for a future where she can enjoy a peaceful life in Afghanistan with her loved ones, fighting for a better tomorrow
