Expecting around 1,000 calls on Bonfire Night, head of operations Garry Mackay emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of crews responding to incidents starting from the afternoon. Mackay stressed the need to safeguard crews as they carry out their duties, highlighting that they are individuals with families who should not face any threatening behavior while on duty. Efforts are in place to ensure public safety and any form of attack impedes the ability of the crews to effectively perform their duties and maintain community safety.
With heavy police presence anticipated within FCZs in both cities, local authorities were granted powers to enforce temporary measures following a significant riot in Dundee’s Kirkton in 2022. Violating the restrictions by setting off fireworks within FCZ boundaries or inciting disturbances in specific zones can lead to criminal charges with potential imprisonment of up to six months and fines of up to £5,000. Dispersal zones in Edinburgh and Glasgow additionally empower police to direct individuals causing alarm or distress to vacate the area within 24 hours to avoid the possibility of arrest for non-compliance.
