Train-attack accused 'maybe linked to other incidents' – police

Police are currently looking into whether the man accused of stabbing 10 individuals on a train has any connection to an attack on a 14-year-old boy and two incidents involving a knifeman at a barbers’ shop. Cambridgeshire Police stated it was reviewing the series of events following the knife assault on the London-bound LNER train after it passed through Peterborough around 19:40 GMT on Saturday. On the previous Friday, a teenager was assaulted in the city, while there were reports of a man carrying a knife at a barbers’ shop.

Anthony Williams, aged 32 and with no fixed abode, has been placed in custody after being charged with 10 counts of attempted murder. Cambridgeshire Police reported that in all three incidents, a “crime was raised,” leading to launched investigations. Various political figures, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, praised the police force, first responders, and the courageous actions of the driver and staff onboard the train during the “vile and horrific attack.” British Transport Police is overseeing the investigation with assistance from Cambridgeshire Police. Mr. Williams has also been charged with one attempted murder count related to an attack in east London on an unidentified man left with facial injuries.

Scunthorpe United footballer Jonathan Gjoshe, 22, and Nottingham Forest fan Stephen Crean were injured in the train attack while en route from Doncaster to London King’s Cross. Mr. Gjoshe encountered a slash across the bicep and underwent surgery. Mr. Crean was hailed a hero after confronting the attacker face to face in the carriage, describing their physical struggle as he suffered slashes to the head and hand. In the House of Commons, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer lauded the actions of the staff onboard the train, acknowledging their bravery and life-saving efforts. MPs highlighted the swift response of train driver Andrew Johnson, formerly of the Royal Navy, who took critical action to divert the train to enable emergency services to reach the scene promptly
