Gatwick Airport second runway challenge filed at High Court

A group of campaigners has taken legal action against the government’s decision to greenlight a second runway at Gatwick Airport. Communities against Gatwick Noise Emissions (Cagne) have lodged a judicial review claim, accusing officials of failing to adequately assess the environmental impact of the project. This move comes after Cagne previously notified the government of their intent to challenge the expansion decision.

The Department for Transport declined to comment on the matter, citing ongoing legal proceedings. Gatwick Airport has expressed its intention to partake in the legal process as an interested party but refrained from providing further comments while the proceedings are ongoing. The £2.2 billion project involves relocating the existing northern runway to facilitate its regular operation, in addition to expanding the airport’s terminals to accommodate the anticipated growth.

Gatwick forecasts that the expansion could lead to over 100,000 additional flights annually by the late 2030s, potentially attracting up to 80 million passengers. Chancellor Rachel Reeves hailed the plans as a job creator, expected to bring in billions worth of investments. Gatwick Airport currently boasts the title of Europe’s busiest single-runway airport, serving over 40 million passengers each year.

Cagne’s legal representatives have highlighted alleged shortcomings in the environmental assessment of the expansion proposal. Concerns include failure to adequately consider noise impacts and improper wastewater treatment protocols. Campaigners also took issue with the reliance on the government’s “Jet Zero” strategy for aviation decarbonization, which they deemed as flawed and unlawful. Sally Pavey, the chair of Cagne, warned of increased noise pollution, sewage system strain, and exacerbation of global warming associated with the airport’s expansion. The Campaign to Protect Rural England’s Sussex branch has voiced support for Cagne’s efforts to challenge the Gatwick expansion plans in court
