Alleged McCann stalker '50-50' on whether she is Madeleine, jury told

In Leicester Crown Court, the cross-examination of Julia Wandelt, the alleged stalker of Madeleine McCann’s parents, began on Wednesday. Wandelt, along with co-defendant Karen Spragg, is accused of stalking Kate and Gerry McCann, causing serious alarm and distress. During the trial, Wandelt expressed doubts about whether she is the missing child, stating she is still “50-50” on the matter.

Prosecutor Michael Duck KC questioned Wandelt about her beliefs regarding her identity. Wandelt responded by saying that she is neither completely convinced nor completely dismissive of the idea that she could be Madeleine McCann. She expressed a desire to see documentation to definitively prove whether or not she is the missing child. Despite the DNA test results confirming she is not Madeleine, Wandelt remains uncertain and emotional about her situation.

While answering questions during the trial, Wandelt raised concerns about her safety and claimed someone had tampered with her drink before the proceedings. Despite being shown evidence that she is not Madeleine, Wandelt continues to question her identity and insists on further investigation into her past. The trial also revealed messages exchanged between Wandelt and Spragg about obtaining the McCanns’ DNA, although Wandelt clarified they were mostly joking about going through their bins and did not actually do so.

The court heard that Wandelt, a Polish national, traveled to the UK in December 2024 and visited the McCanns’ home in Leicestershire for the first time. The purpose of the visit was to deliver a DNA report to Mrs. McCann, prepared by a US expert. Wandelt’s interactions with the McCanns, as well as her discussions with Spragg regarding their DNA, were highlighted during the trial. The proceedings continue as both defendants maintain their innocence amidst the ongoing legal battle
