Nineteen cases of food poisoning have been confirmed following a carvery meal at a pub where customers fell ill. Torfaen Council looked into reports of customers feeling unwell after dining at the Cwrt Henllys Bar & Restaurant in Cwmbran on October 5. The council stated that the cause of the food poisoning was Clostridium perfringens, a bacteria that thrives as food cools. It assured the public that there was no broader risk to public health. The pub mentioned that it has implemented “positive changes” following the incident and has heeded all advice and support from environmental health teams.
After the council’s inquiry, no additional cases were reported. Earlier in October, there were reports of 52 people falling ill due to suspected food poisoning. According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), Clostridium perfringens is a common bacteria found in animals and the environment. Its spores can survive cooking and multiply during cooling and storage at room temperature. The FSA website notes that outbreaks of C. perfringens food poisoning are usually linked to places where large groups are served food and where maintaining safe food temperatures can be challenging.
The Cwrt Henllys Bar & Restaurant has been contacted by the BBC for a comment. However, the restaurant shared a statement on Facebook acknowledging that three or four tables were affected by the illness. The statement mentioned ongoing investigations into a potential supplier issue, particularly concerning contaminated turkey. The restaurant emphasized its cooperation with environmental health authorities and the implementation of changes to prevent food from cooling down before being served. It stressed that there is no concrete evidence directly linking them to the food poisoning and that they have not been advised to shut down their kitchen or pose further risks to the public.
The establishment’s primary focus remains on supporting its customers, addressing their concerns, and rectifying the situation. They urged anyone with positive test results to reach out for further discussion. Despite facing challenges, the restaurant expressed its commitment to prioritizing customer welfare and striving to make amends
