Ceredigion mum who lost son to suicide wants more police support

A mother was left alone to cope with the shocking news of her son’s suicide after a young police officer delivered the devastating news and then left her to deal with the aftermath. Rhian Wyn, from Llandysul, Ceredigion, recounted the night in 2020 when she was informed of her son’s death, expressing the lack of support and guidance provided by the authorities following such a tragic event. The emotional burden of having to process the loss of her son, Caio, without any assistance left her feeling overwhelmed and isolated during a time of deep grief and confusion.

Rhian’s harrowing experience has prompted her to advocate for more compassionate and practical support for families affected by suicide. She has joined a campaign initiated by Mimi Conder, a widow from England, to urge police forces to assign a family support officer to bereaved families after a suicide. Rhian emphasized the importance of having someone to navigate the complex procedures and to offer guidance and emotional support to families grappling with the loss of a loved one.

Reflecting on the traumatic aftermath of her son’s death, Rhian shared the overwhelming feeling of solitude and helplessness that consumed her and her young daughters. In addition to the initial shock of learning about Caio’s suicide, Rhian faced the daunting task of navigating the inquest procedure, which required her to recount every detail of her son’s life and death without any support or companionship. The absence of guidance and understanding left Rhian feeling compelled to suppress her grief in order to navigate the legal processes on her own.

Rhian is an advocate for Jason’s Law, which aims to establish a trained family liaison officer (FLO) to support families affected by suicide and guide them through the challenging aftermath of such tragic events. She emphasized the need for clear communication and sensitivity when delivering news of a death by suicide, highlighting the profound impact that compassionate support from the police and other services can have on bereaved families as they begin to process their grief and start the healing process. Dyfed-Powys Police reiterated their commitment to following national guidance on the deployment of FLOs, particularly in cases where the death is deemed suspicious, while acknowledging the importance of connecting families with external organizations and support services during such difficult times
