Controversial British journalist and media commentator Sami Hamdi, known for his outspoken criticism of Israel, has recently found himself in hot water with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). While on a speaking tour in the US, Hamdi was detained by ICE officers, and his visa was revoked, according to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin on Sunday. Hamdi is currently in ICE custody awaiting removal from the country, as per McLaughlin.
Accusations have been made by the State Department and DHS claiming that Hamdi is a supporter of terrorism and poses a threat to national security. On the other hand, a Muslim advocacy group argues that he is being targeted for his political views and that this is a violation of his right to free speech. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has spoken out, stating that Hamdi’s detainment may be linked to his critical views on Israel’s actions in Gaza.
In response to Hamdi’s detainment, the State Department emphasized that the US does not have an obligation to accommodate individuals who support terrorism and endanger the safety of Americans. The department also mentioned that they will continue to revoke visas for those involved in such activities. Furthermore, CAIR has urged ICE to release Hamdi immediately, with their lawyers reportedly working towards addressing the perceived injustice.
Amidst this controversy, far-right political activist Laura Loomer has accused Hamdi of supporting terrorist organizations, leading to a series of posts on social media. This conflict between Loomer and CAIR has been labeled as promoting “anti-Muslim conspiracy theories”. It is important to note that this incident is not the first time the Trump administration has taken action against individuals critical of Israel’s actions, as seen in the ongoing case of Columbia University graduate and pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil who was also threatened with deportation
