Nicholas Tooley, a resident of Alphington Road, Exeter, found himself in a dire financial situation after accumulating over £30,000 in fines due to evading train fares. The Exeter Magistrates’ Court recently heard that Tooley had been avoiding paying for his trips between Exeter and Teignmouth to visit his family for a span of seven years starting from April 2017. This ultimately led to him owing a significant sum of £30,012.90 in unpaid fares, court fines, and related costs.
District Judge Stuart Smith presided over the case and acknowledged the predicament Tooley had found himself in, given his reliance on Universal Credit as a source of income. To provide Tooley with a fresh start, Judge Smith reduced the outstanding amount owed to £1,154.30, specifically clearing the fines accumulated during July and August of the current year. With a stern warning, the judge advised Tooley to ensure he pays for each trip taken to avoid facing similar consequences in the future.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that had Tooley paid the standard single fare of £6.60 for his journeys, his total expenses would have been significantly lower than the hefty fines he had amassed. In fact, it was stated that the fare back in 2017 was merely £1.80, highlighting the extent of the financial burden Tooley had unknowingly placed upon himself. Despite managing to settle £2,100 of the fines, which had been recalculated to £14,517.30, it was emphasized that such practices were unsustainable and needed to be rectified promptly to prevent further financial strain.
Judge Smith underscored the importance of adhering to regulations by stating that individuals must pay for their tickets when utilizing public transportation services such as trains. He expressed concern over Tooley’s escalating debt, emphasizing the necessity of avoiding such excessive financial liabilities that are beyond one’s financial means. By receiving a revised payment plan, Tooley was granted the opportunity to remedy his past actions and start afresh, recognizing the importance of complying with fare regulations to avoid similar repercussions in the future
