Dr Chris van Tulleken, who co-hosts the BBC’s What’s Up Docs with his twin brother Dr Xand, has a surprising breakfast choice of a giant mug of instant black coffee and no food. Despite hosting a wellness podcast, he admits to not eating breakfast as a way to avoid eating all day as he approaches middle age. The honesty about not leading a perfect life and struggling with things they should do but don’t makes them relatable to listeners.
Both brothers, who are medical doctors and have gained popularity through their TV and radio work, have become household names. They present children’s series Operation Ouch! and Dr Xand is a resident expert on BBC’s Morning Live, while Dr Chris is known for his bestselling book Ultra-Processed People. On their podcast, they often disagree over health and wellbeing claims and enjoy working together, with Chris admitting they started the podcast to answer their own questions, which turned out to be similar to everyone else’s problems.
Dr Chris and Dr Xand have made positive changes in their lives over the course of more than 30 podcast episodes. They have addressed various topics, including not obsessing over getting eight hours of sleep, learning to pause before saying yes or no, brushing their teeth mindfully, and understanding that willpower does not exist. By sharing their experiences, struggles, and successes, they aim to help listeners navigate their own health and well-being challenges.
The brothers have realized that struggling with health is not a personal failure and that external forces often make it difficult to prioritize well-being. While they may not follow every piece of expert advice, they strive to align their actions with their values. Dr Xand points out that many forces compete for attention, money, and time, but the goal is to help people identify their values and live in accordance with them. Through their podcast, they hope to empower listeners to take better care of themselves and make positive changes in their lives
