Lead Weather Presenter Simon King and Harry Sekulich reported that rain and wind warnings in the UK have decreased as Storm Benjamin has moved away to the east. The storm, named by the French weather service Météo France, brought violent winds to the northern coast of France with gusts reaching up to 100mph as it passed through the English Channel. However, its impact on the UK has lessened as it continues to clear away to the east.
Initially, there were four Met Office yellow weather warnings in place for various parts of England and Wales, but these have now been reduced to only two – one for rain in Norfolk and Suffolk until 18:00 BST, and the other for wind across eastern England until 15:00 BST. Despite this reduction in warnings, there is still a possibility of localised flooding in Norfolk and Suffolk due to ongoing rainfall.
While the strongest winds from the storm are now offshore in the North Sea and heading towards Belgium and the Netherlands, eastern England will still experience gusty winds. Gusts of 40-50mph, possibly reaching up to 55mph in coastal regions, will persist, leading to a continued yellow wind warning until 15:00 BST. These winds could cause travel disruption, particularly for ferry routes, as seen by the earlier power outages in Suffolk and a tree blocking the railway in Hertfordshire affecting London overground services.
Looking ahead, more severe rain and winds are expected to hit western Europe, including France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. As a result, two Europa League matches in Rotterdam have been rescheduled to earlier kick-off times due to the impending severe weather conditions. The storm, named Benjamin by Météo France, was not initially deemed severe enough by the Met Office to be named, but it prompted warnings of possible damage and travel disruptions in northern and western France. Despite being named by Météo France, Benjamin will not replace Bram in the UK’s list of named storms
