A man from Wirral, Karl Davies, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for encouraging self-harm to a child under the Online Safety Act. Davies, a father-of-two, pleaded guilty to 17 offenses involving a schoolgirl aged between 13 and 14. The judge described his behavior as having a “monstrous sense of sexual entitlement” with a “catastrophic” impact on the victim.
Davies first made contact with the girl on Snapchat in June 2023, coercing her into sending indecent images and videos of herself over an entire year. He used various aliases to communicate with her, and then sexually abused her in his car on four occasions during the summer of 2024. Judge Hilary Manley imposed an extended sentence on Davies, recognizing his “depraved and sadistic” crimes.
During the abuse, Davies also encouraged the victim to film herself committing acts of self-harm and even provided her with razors to facilitate this. He is the first person to be convicted under Section 184 of the Online Safety Act 2023 for encouraging serious self-harm to a child. The judge condemned his actions as “abhorrent” and highlighted the depths of his behavior for sexual gratification. Despite admitting to the charges, Davies denied being sexually interested in children.
Davies’s wife discovered his aliases contacting the teenage girl, but he continued his abusive behavior. The aliases became more threatening over time, with Davies exercising control and manipulation over the victim. Judge Manley emphasized the sinister nature of his actions, using trickery, lies, and blackmail to satisfy his desires. As part of his sentencing, Davies will be on license for five years after serving his 20-year prison term
