In a show of incredible courage, a police sergeant has been honored with the King’s Commendation for Bravery after intervening to protect his colleague from a knife-wielding attacker. Sgt Tim Ansell bravely confronted 27-year-old Jacob Brown as he threatened to harm Sgt Marc Foster during a routine interaction with a driver in Whalley Range in July 2023.
The harrowing incident unfolded as Brown suddenly attacked the officers, stabbing and slashing both Sgt Ansell and Sgt Foster. Despite the danger, PC Marcus Wolstencroft was able to deploy a Taser, bringing the assailant under control. Bodyworn and dashboard camera footage captured the frantic struggle, highlighting the selfless actions of the officers in the face of grave danger.
Following the ordeal, Sgt Ansell was left with multiple wounds, including two open wounds to his neck, while Sgt Foster sustained slash injuries. Despite their injuries, the officers’ swift response ensured that no harm came to the public. Their bravery has been recognized with various prestigious awards, including GMP’s Bravery Awards and the John Egerton Bravery Award.
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police commended the officers for their heroic actions, emphasizing that their quick thinking and selfless deeds prevented any harm to bystanders. Jacob Brown, the attacker, was later sentenced to an indefinite hospital order, bringing a sense of closure to the terrifying incident that unfolded on that fateful day in July 2023
