Julius Matera: £50k appeal over Salford body in the weeds murder

The mysterious murder case of a gentle and trusting man whose body was discovered hidden among weeds in Salford has left authorities baffled. Julius Matera, a 43-year-old man described as timid and high-risk due to vulnerabilities such as poor vision and alcoholism, was reported missing on October 24, 2023. After being missing for just over two months, a tip-off led police to an address in Great Cheetham Street West on December 4, where his body was found in a dense patch of Japanese Knotweed.

Despite making three arrests in connection with the case, no charges have been filed, prompting Greater Manchester Police (GMP) to offer a £50,000 reward for information through a BBC Crimewatch Live appeal. Detective Inspector Rachel Smith, who is leading the investigation, emphasized Mr. Matera’s kind and quiet nature, which unfortunately made him a target for bullying. According to Det Insp Smith, the investigation took a significant turn when a woman reported overhearing a conversation suggesting that Mr. Matera had been harmed, sparking a search at a House of Multiple Occupancy on Great Cheetham Street West.

Upon the discovery of a pair of discarded glasses in the garden, investigators located Mr. Matera’s body hidden in the dense weeds, where forensic analysis determined his estimated time of death between 20:30 BST on Friday, October 13, and Saturday, October 14, 2023. His family, describing him as friendly, considerate, respectful, funny, and adventurous, urged anyone with information to come forward to help bring closure to the case and allow his soul to rest in peace. The family fondly remembered Mr. Matera for his contagious laughter that brightened even the darkest moments and noted his joyful spirit that continues to be dearly missed
