class=”half-and-half__content”> UK’s first rooftop solar experiment a success

An experiment to install rooftop solar panels on London homes – the first of its kind in the UK – is proving successful in cutting carbon emissions while saving residents money.

The Solar Sharing Trial raised £1.7m to install solar panels and battery storage on social and private housing in the boroughs of Southwark and Barking, with the first installations completed in September. It has now reported a 23% carbon emissions reduction across 13 homes, while one household saved £122 on its energy bill in just one month.

“This is a glimpse into the future of urban energy that we need to achieve if we are to tackle climate change,” said Alex German, chief of EIT InnoEnergy UK, which coordinated the trial. “City spaces and communities are going to play a key role – we need to work collaboratively to make the shifts that are needed.”

Those involved are now calling on the UK government to support larger projects that can have a bigger impact on decarbonising energy and tackling fuel poverty.
