A woman who was raped by a GP’s son is calling for his father to be suspended due to his harassment towards her. Dr. Andrew McFarlane, 61, is facing charges of communications offences after he called Ellie Wilson derogatory names like a “manipulative liar”, a “slut”, and a “hippo” in posts on X. This incident stems from 2022 when his son, Daniel McFarlane, was convicted of raping Ms. Wilson, who has since become an advocate for male sexual violence survivors. Despite complains from Rape Crisis Scotland to the General Medical Council (GMC), Dr. McFarlane continues to see patients at NHS Highland.
Dr. McFarlane, who has yet to appear in court over the charge, has been unresponsive to attempts by the BBC to contact him. The situation escalated earlier this year when he began posting about Ms. Wilson’s case, alleging that his son was a victim of injustice and that Ms. Wilson had threatened and blackmailed him. Daniel McFarlane was found guilty of raping Ms. Wilson between December 2017 and February 2018. His conviction was based partially on a covert recording where he admitted to the rape.
The GMC, which handles complaints about doctors, referred Dr. McFarlane’s case to the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) rather than suspending him, despite the seriousness of the incident. Special conditions were imposed on his medical registration, and Dr. McFarlane is required to update the GMC on any changes to his job title or employer contact details. Rape Crisis Scotland’s chief executive expressed concern over the GMC’s handling of the situation, calling for Dr. McFarlane’s suspension to be reconsidered to protect the relationships between survivors of rape and their GPs.
Dr. McFarlane, who was previously working as a locum GP, has not worked for nearly a year at Alness and Invergordon Medical Group. While he is still able to see patients within NHS Highland, it is unclear if he is currently employed. The health board is ensuring the safety and well-being of patients, while the GMC has launched an investigation alongside ongoing criminal proceedings. Dr. McFarlane is under interim conditions on his practice during this time
