Woolton Hall remedial work to remove immediate danger and secure site

Urgent remedial work is set to begin at Woolton Hall in Liverpool in response to damage caused by a recent fire. The focus of the program will be on removing the most at-risk parts of the building to address immediate safety concerns. While Liverpool City Council does not own the building, Woolton Hall Ltd, as the legal owner, holds primary responsibility for maintenance and repairs. However, councils have the authority to intervene if the preservation of historic structures is in jeopardy.

Contractors will carefully dismantle compromised walls on the northwest and southerly rear elevations of the building to mitigate the risk of falling debris and prevent potential collapse. During the remedial work, the site will be secured to prevent unauthorized access and safeguard the surrounding properties and the public. The existing perimeter fence will be fortified with additional Heras fencing at strategic points, and warning signs will be prominently displayed around the premises to deter entry.

Following the completion of the urgent repairs, the immediate hazards will have been addressed and the imminent collapse risk reduced. However, Woolton Hall will still be deemed unsafe and off-limits for entry. Authorities will reassess the situation post-remediation to determine the next steps, which may include utilizing listed building legislation and additional measures under the Building Act to ensure public safety and chart a sustainable future for the Hall.

Cllr Nick Small, Cabinet Member for Growth and Economy, emphasized the paramount importance of safety, prompting the swift initiation of remedial work to remove destabilized walls and secure the site. While these measures aim to deter access and minimize risks, the owner remains accountable for maintaining the security of Woolton Hall. Once the emergency repairs are completed, further actions may be pursued to safeguard the Hall’s long-term viability
