A funeral director has confessed to 36 charges of fraud while denying others in a court hearing. Robert Bush, 47, acknowledged 35 offenses of fraud by false representation and one of running a business fraudulently at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull. The charges included the sale of funeral plans and the mishandling of human remains, including those of four babies lost in pregnancy. Bush also faces allegations of preventing lawful and decent burials and stealing from charity collection boxes.
Despite admitting to the majority of the charges, Bush refuted 30 counts of preventing proper burials and one money theft accusation during his appearance at Hull Crown Court. Following an investigation prompted by concerns regarding the care of deceased individuals in March 2024, Humberside Police discovered instances of fraudulent representation pertaining to ashes provided to families after pregnancy loss. Bush, who has relocated from East Yorkshire to West Yorkshire, is scheduled to stand trial at Sheffield Crown Court on October 5, 2026.
During the court session, as the clerk listed all 67 charges against him, Bush was attired in a gray three-piece suit, white shirt, and purple tie. Each time a plea of not guilty was entered, audible reactions emanated from the packed public gallery. At the conclusion of the hearing, a woman in the gallery shouted at Bush as he exited the courtroom. He was granted bail until his forthcoming court appearance.
