Could I have saved my parents' lives if I'd been taught CPR?

In the aftermath of his parents’ untimely deaths, Cameron McGerr found himself addressing MSPs in the Scottish Parliament, advocating for the inclusion of CPR training in all schools. His father, Kevin, passed away from a cardiac arrest earlier this year, following his mother, Lynne’s fatal heart attack three years prior. Cameron, a student at Clydeview Academy, believes that if he had been equipped with CPR skills, he might have been able to save at least one of his parents during their crises.

As a result of his personal tragedy, Cameron successfully lobbied his school to introduce first aid training and has now taken up the cause to extend this initiative to schools across Scotland. Determined to prevent others from experiencing the helplessness he felt, Cameron launched the Pulse of Life campaign, urging more schools to provide CPR training to students. He emphasizes that anyone, regardless of their relationship, could require immediate intervention in a cardiac emergency.

Cameron’s efforts have garnered support from his school community, with teachers and fellow students engaging in CPR lessons. The headteacher, Craig Gibson, commends Cameron for his resilience in the face of adversity and plans to implement CPR education for all first-year pupils, with hopes of expanding the program to other schools in the region. Despite his nerves, Cameron’s appearance at the Scottish Parliament on what would have been his parents’ anniversary underscored his unwavering commitment to making a difference in honor of his late parents.

Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth has reached out to Cameron, acknowledging the importance of his campaign and offering to meet with him. The Scottish government affirms its dedication to collaborating with partners to ensure that students have access to CPR training. Through his advocacy, Cameron not only seeks to honor his parents’ memory but also hopes to empower others to act swiftly and confidently in life-threatening situations
