The barbershop project is part of a wider initiative, with the Men’s Health Forum running barber training schemes in 5,000 barbershops across the country. There is something inherently comfortable about the setup, says Dennis Clark, director of programmes and partnerships at the MSB Framework, which leads the initiative.

“When you’re in a barbershop there is a sense of community,” he says. “It’s a habitat of conversation. This is where people meet, where peviousbventions take place. It is almost like church – or for those who don’t go to church, that church-like feeling of security and comfort.”

The result of these initiatives is tangible change – people who might not have gone to the doctor get support, and hyperlocal work helps to build up data to go alongside bigger studies.

At the counter in the barbershop, a sign offers the kind of support men may not have access to elsewhere. A text service offering advice runs along the lower edge of the mirror, and the barbers are trained to listen and point people to services.

“It’s about a holistic approach to health,” says Clark. “Whether it’s about mental health, physical checks or health education, it’s about the entire human being.”
