Tommy Robinson refused to give police phone Pin to protect 'journalistic material'

Tommy Robinson, a far-right activist whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, is currently on trial at Westminster Magistrates’ Court for allegedly failing to comply with counter-terrorism powers in Folkestone in July 2024. During a recent court hearing, it was revealed that Robinson refused to provide his mobile phone Pin to police at the entrance to the Channel Tunnel because it contained “journalist material.”

If found guilty, Robinson could face up to three months in jail and/or receive a £2,500 fine. The trial began on Monday and is expected to last two days, with Robinson being referred to as Mr. Lennon in court. Before the hearing, Robinson addressed his followers in a video where he mentioned billionaire Elon Musk, who he claimed had picked up the legal bill for his case, which Robinson described as “state persecution.” However, Musk has not publicly confirmed this.

During the court proceedings, PC Mitchell Thorogood, a counter-terrorism officer with Kent Police, testified that he detained Robinson under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act after encountering him in a silver Bentley at the Channel Tunnel entrance. Robinson had allegedly provided a dubious explanation about his travel plans and did not make eye contact during the exchange. When asked to provide his phone’s Pin, Robinson refused, citing the presence of journalist material.

Prosecutor Jo Morris disclosed that Robinson used an expletive towards officers during the encounter, and a subsequent search of his vehicle uncovered a small bag containing £13,370 and €1,910. Due to credible threats against Robinson’s life, the defendant’s address was not disclosed during the proceedings, and the public gallery at the back of the court was filled with over 30 supporters of Robinson, one of whom was spotted wearing a red Mega (Make England Great Again) baseball cap. The trial is ongoing, with further developments expected in the coming days
