Two individuals have been brought before court on charges relating to the murder of the incarcerated singer Ian Watkins. Watkins, a former member of the band Lostprophets serving a 29-year sentence for child sex offenses, was fatally injured at Wakefield Prison in an incident that occurred just after 09:30 BST on a Saturday. Rashid Gedel, 25, and Samuel Dodsworth, 43, appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning in connection to the murder of Watkins.
During separate hearings at the court, both Gedel and Dodsworth confirmed their names and dates of birth but did not enter any pleas. They were informed that they would be appearing at Leeds Crown Court the following day. Watkins, who pleaded guilty to several offenses including child sex assault but denied rape, faced an additional six years on licence if ever released. The severity of his crimes led to a sentence that the presiding judge described as breaking “new ground” and reaching “new depths of depravity.”
Lostprophets, which was formed in Pontypridd in 1997, achieved significant success with 11 top 40 hits and a chart-topping album between 2002 and 2010. Following Watkins’ convictions, the band issued a statement expressing their shock and condemnation of his actions, emphasizing their sympathy for his victims. Wakefield Prison, where the incident occurred, houses some of the UK’s most notorious criminals and has faced scrutiny for its deteriorating conditions and increased violence in recent years.
