He recognises the difficult balance between celebrating diversity and acknowledging the challenges that come with it.
“When you come from a different culture, it is your responsibility to integrate, to adapt to the values and norms of the country you have chosen to live in.
“But on the other side, the people in that country must accept you and help you to adapt.”
Despite the concerns, Rishi insists there is much to be proud of in Handsworth.
“This is a place where you can find the best of every culture – vegetables from India, spices from the Middle East, textiles from Africa,” he says.
“It’s a place where you can truly celebrate what it means to be British – a mix of everything, a fusion of cultures and traditions.”
