Man re-arrested over Manchester synagogue attack

Following the tragic incident at the Manchester synagogue, a man was recently re-arrested at the city’s airport on suspicion of failing to disclose information related to terrorism. Initially, the 30-year-old individual was arrested on suspicion of terrorism offenses in connection to the attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, where two people lost their lives at the hands of Jihad Al-Shamie, aged 35.

Counter Terrorism Policing North West revealed that the suspect had been re-arrested at Manchester Airport on suspicion of violating Section 38B of the Terrorism Act 2000 by withholding information that could have assisted in preventing terrorism. Currently, the individual has been released on bail subject to certain conditions, pending further investigation.

It has been clarified that under the Terrorism Act, individuals are required to disclose any information they possess that could help prevent terrorist activities. Despite the recent developments, authorities have stated that there is no prevailing threat to public safety following the synagogue attack.

In the aftermath of the tragic incident, six individuals were initially detained, with subsequent releases of two individuals and continued questioning of the remaining four. While some of those detained were set to be released by Greater Manchester Police, the investigation remains ongoing. Additionally, it was revealed that Al-Shamie made a 999 call in which he pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group before carrying out the attack.
