Stephen Lawrence murderer must name other killers, father says

Investigations correspondent Daniel De Simone reports on Stephen Lawrence’s father’s stance on the release of one of his son’s murderers, David Norris. Norris is set to appeal for release on licence after serving 13 years of his life sentence for his role in the racist stabbing of 18-year-old Stephen Lawrence in 1993. While Norris and another perpetrator, Gary Dobson, have been convicted, four other suspects remain unidentified and at large.

Dr. Neville Lawrence, Stephen’s father, believes that Norris should disclose the identities of his accomplices if he is to be considered safe for release from prison. The police have always suspected that there were a total of six assailants, as corroborated by Stephen’s friend Duwayne Brooks. Despite the conviction of Norris and Dobson, the Acourt brothers, Luke Knight, and a sixth suspect named Matthew White – who passed away in 2021 – have never faced justice.

Norris had initially denied any involvement in the murder, opting for no-comment interviews and maintaining his innocence during the trial. However, earlier this year, he confessed to his role in the crime while in prison, admitting to being present during the attack and hitting Stephen but not stabbing him. This revelation presents an unprecedented situation where Norris seeks release for a crime he has admitted to, while multiple perpetrators remain unidentified.

Dr. Lawrence insists that Norris must reveal the identities of the other perpetrators and indicate whether he still holds racist beliefs in order to be considered for release. The Parole Board will conduct a public hearing over three days to assess Norris’s suitability for release on licence. Input from prison staff, psychologists, and impact statements on behalf of Stephen’s family will assist in the decision-making process. The case remains under scrutiny following a BBC-led review that prompted an independent examination after the Metropolitan Police concluded their investigation in 2020
