Despite the shock and devastation caused by the incident, many residents were heartened by the support shown by people of various faiths in the community. The attacker, Jihad Al-Shamie, a British citizen of Syrian descent, was condemned by his family for his “heinous act,” with calls for unity and solidarity among different communities.
The area of Crumpsall, Prestwich, and Cheetham Hill has long been a melting pot of different cultural and religious backgrounds, with synagogues, churches, mosques, and Sikh gurdwaras coexisting peacefully. Residents like Javed Fozdar, a Muslim shop owner, emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and unity in the face of such horrific events. Despite tensions surrounding conflicts like those in Gaza, the community has generally been able to live harmoniously together.
Safoora, another resident, emphasized the importance of tolerance and humanity above all else, regardless of religious or cultural differences. Mohammed Baz, the manager of Manchester Plaza, highlighted the social strength and cohesion within the community, despite challenges and heightened emotions following recent protests and incidents.
