Taking on the role of chief after the tragic murder of Sarah Everard, Sir Mark vowed to oust wrongdoers from the Met. His reaction to the Panorama footage obtained through secret filming was one of disgust, describing the involved officers as “ghastly, ghastly individuals” for their appalling behavior, including advocating for violence against immigrants, celebrating the use of force, and dismissing rape claims. While empathizing with the public’s displeasure over the toxic views expressed, he emphasized the significant efforts undertaken by the force to eradicate such officers since the Casey Review initiated post-Sarah Everard’s murder.
When questioned about accepting the review’s findings that the Met was institutionally racist and misogynistic, Sir Mark defended the force’s ongoing counter-corruption initiative, highlighting the removal of nearly 1,500 individuals from the Met as part of the efforts to address the issues. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed shock at the described content of the footage and called for a robust response from Sir Mark.
