A group of individuals who identified themselves as the Kingdom of Kubala were recently removed from council-owned land in the Scottish Borders by police. This self-styled African tribe had been camping in a wooded area near Jedburgh, where they claimed they were reclaiming land stolen from their ancestors 400 years ago. Despite their refusal to acknowledge the authority of the courts to evict them, law enforcement officials stepped in to remove them from the premises.
The eviction, which was live-streamed on TikTok by the tribe, occurred early Thursday morning. Ghanaian Kofi Offeh, 36, and Jean Gasho, 43, known as King Atehehe and Queen Nandi respectively, along with their “handmaiden” Kaura Taylor from Texas, who goes by Asnat, had made the hillside above the town in the Scottish Borders their temporary home since the spring. The group’s presence drew attention and led to legal action against them.
Following a court hearing at Selkirk Sheriff Court, the group was prohibited from returning to the private land they had previously been removed from. Sheriff Peter Paterson imposed expenses on the individuals, who were not present at the hearing. A week earlier, a court order had already restricted them from accessing any council land in the area, including the site they had occupied before being evicted.
