Another officer, in the same pub, described how he had first pinned a suspect up against a wall before punching him, then wrestling him to the floor. His behaviour was described as “unprofessional and unacceptable” by the force.

The Met Police said that all allegations and complaints were taken extremely seriously, referred immediately to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, and that the public “need to have confidence in the processes that potentially scrutinise or resolve or investigate police misconduct”.

While receipts were issued for non-compliance, it said CCTV equipment at Charing Cross was “not fit for purpose”. It said some officers had been referred to a panel for possible misconduct. The IOPC said it was reviewing the referrals to decide whether to investigate any of them.

The Met Commissioner, Dame Cressida Dick, said she was taking the allegations seriously.
