In honor of World Elders’ Day, local officials joined Lord Mayor, Cllr Barbara Murray, at the Joseph Lappin Centre in Old Swan to commemorate the elderly residents and acknowledge their significant role within our community.
The gathering was more than just a festive occasion; it served as a platform for older residents to voice their thoughts, share ideas, and reflect on their experiences. The wealth of lived experience, insight, and wisdom that our older community members bring about the places we call home highlights the importance of creating spaces where they can come together, socialize, and exchange perspectives.
During a Question Time-style event, elderly residents not only connected with each other but also participated in structured dialogues with professionals from various sectors. This interactive exchange ensures that older individuals feel listened to, communities are fortified by learning directly from those familiar with local challenges and strengths, and services become more attuned to the needs, priorities, and aspirations of this vital population group. By merging social interaction with meaningful discourse, we are advancing towards a future where services are not merely provided to older people but are collaboratively shaped with them.
The previous year’s community event had a tangible impact on local pensioners and residents. Attendees formed new bonds, uncovered additional social activities in their vicinity, and received complimentary laptops and Wi-Fi to facilitate online service access and connectivity. The event also fostered partnerships throughout the neighborhood, with the police holding drop-in sessions to enhance safety and trust, and Primary Care Networks offering services directly in community centers to make healthcare more accessible. Efforts were also made to address speeding in residential areas, contributing to creating safer streets for all residents.
