The fugitive 'people smuggler' wanted over football club fraud

The BBC has uncovered that Goran Assad Jalal, the suspected leader of a people-smuggling ring, is also linked to a construction fraud case at Heart of Midlothian Football Club. Jalal was charged in 2017 for a fraud amounting to over £85,000 against the Scottish Premiership club but has evaded trial so far. Current investigations by the National Crime Agency (NCA) indicate that the 39-year-old, a British national of Kurdish descent, is believed to be on the run in Iraq.

Authorities have put considerable efforts into locating Jalal, with the UK government placing financial sanctions on him in July. The case against Jalal in Scotland is still active, and the NCA has affirmed their commitment to bringing him to justice. Heart of Midlothian FC has managed to recover the stolen funds from the fraud.

In 2017, Hearts fell victim to an online fraud scheme, which involved Jalal allegedly manipulating information to divert payments meant for a construction company involved in revamping the club’s stadium. The indictment against Jalal accuses him of infecting a laptop with a virus to access sensitive information and misleading Hearts into transferring money to his account instead of the rightful recipient.

In addition to the construction fraud case, Jalal faces charges under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 for allegedly obtaining and concealing criminal property related to the Hearts fraud. Despite the indictment being filed in 2020, Jalal is yet to face trial. The Crown Office has refrained from commenting on the specifics of the case, while BSB Structural, the engineering company involved, has chosen not to comment further
