Commitment to deliver Liverpool North New Town

A joint commitment has been announced by Liverpool City Council, Sefton Council, and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority to drive significant housing growth and investment in communities throughout North Liverpool and Bootle. This statement comes in response to the news that their proposal did not make the cut for the government’s New Town initiative. The ambitious development project, known as Liverpool North, covers a 5km stretch between Sefton and Liverpool, encompassing Everton, the Greatie Market area, Anfield, Kirkdale, and the £20 million Bootle New Strand development.

The project aims to revitalize several brownfield sites concentrated around existing local hubs and transportation networks, setting the stage for accelerated housing construction, economic development, and sustainability. Positioned north of Everton FC’s upcoming £500 million stadium at Bramley Moore Dock, Liverpool North also includes the Toffee Trail linking Goodison to Hill Dickinson Stadium, the Red Walk from Anfield to the city center, and the facilitation of access to the canal connecting Sefton and Liverpool. Collaboration between Liverpool City Council, Sefton Council, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, Homes England, registered providers in the area, and other key stakeholders has laid the groundwork for a compelling 10-year vision for the region.

Expressing his frustrations, Steve Rotheram, the Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, laments the rejection of their Liverpool North New Town bid, deeming it a missed opportunity for the government to support long-neglected communities. Despite this setback, local efforts to rejuvenate the area, from Everton’s stadium project to the transformation of Bootle Strand, have already begun shaping the future of Liverpool North without central government backing. Determined to secure investment and attention for North Liverpool and South Sefton, Rotheram asserts his commitment to advocating for the region’s prosperity. Liverpool City Council Leader, Councillor Liam Robinson, echoes this determination, emphasizing their unwavering dedication to driving transformative change in Liverpool North, even in the face of disappointment from the bid rejection.

Councillor Marion Atkinson, Leader of Sefton Council, also expresses disappointment at not making the shortlist but reaffirms the council’s steadfast commitment to revitalizing Bootle and South Sefton. Embracing a bold vision for the area’s future, Atkinson highlights the ongoing collaboration with partners to bring this vision to fruition. Undeterred by the setback of not securing New Town status, the councils remain focused on leveraging existing initiatives, such as the redevelopment of Bootle Town Centre and the opportunities presented by the new Everton Stadium, to continue driving progress in the region and seek alternative avenues for government collaboration
