Nursery hackers threaten to publish more children's profiles

In a disturbing turn of events, hackers have taken control of sensitive information from thousands of nursery children and their families, demanding a ransom in exchange for not releasing more data online. The group, known as Radiant, breached the Kido nursery chain and exposed profiles of 20 children, along with personal data of multiple employees, including names, addresses, national insurance numbers, and contact details.

Although Kido has not officially commented on the situation following the attack, they are cooperating with authorities, and the Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation into the matter. Former head of the National Cyber Security Centre, Ciaran Martin, condemned the hackers’ actions as “absolutely horrible” but reassured the public that the risk of potential harm to children is minimal.

The breach occurred through Famly, a software service utilized by various nurseries and childcare organizations. Famly’s CEO, Anders Laustsen, emphasized that the breach did not occur due to vulnerabilities within their security measures and stated that no other customers were affected by the attack. The criminals behind the hack have displayed a gallery of 20 children on their website, showcasing detailed personal information alongside nursery pictures, dates of birth, and living arrangements.

Parents have expressed their concerns over the breach, with reports of threatening phone calls from the hackers demanding ransom payments to prevent the release of further data. Despite the distress caused by the incident, Sean, a parent with a child at the affected nursery, empathized with the staff and urged others to direct their frustration towards the perpetrators responsible for the breach. Cybercriminals frequently resort to pressuring organizations to pay ransoms, and while contacting individual victims is rare, it showcases the audacity and desperation of these hackers
