The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has made the decision to remove certain staff members from the investigation into the Nottingham attacks killer. This decision came after allegations surfaced that these staff members had shared details of the investigation with officers involved in the case. In March, the IOPC reopened its investigation into Leicestershire Police officers following new evidence related to Valdo Calocane’s actions prior to the killings of Ian Coates, Grace O’Malley-Kumar, and Barnaby Webber in June 2023.
According to a report in The Times, IOPC investigators allegedly informed officers that they would likely face minimal repercussions such as words of advice or reflective practice, indicating the families of the victims were influencing the disciplinary case. Emma Webber, Barnaby’s mother, expressed her lack of surprise at these developments during an interview on Radio 4’s Today program. She criticized the IOPC, stating that the allegations have thrown the watchdog organization “into disarray.”
Valdo Calocane, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, was responsible for the fatal stabbings of Ian Coates, Barnaby Webber, and Grace O’Malley-Kumar. He was sentenced to a hospital order in January 2024. The IOPC has initiated an independent external review in response to the allegations made by Leicestershire Police officers. The staff members accused of inappropriate comments were not involved in determining the disciplinary actions regarding the case. The IOPC spokesperson emphasized the seriousness of the situation and assured that they are investigating the matter thoroughly, alongside addressing other complaints raised by the victims’ families, while keeping them informed of the progress
