The initial group of migrants to arrive in the UK under the new “one in, one out” agreement with France includes a family of three, including a young child. These individuals have been granted three-month visas, which do not permit them to work or access public funds, although they may apply to stay in the country. This development follows the removal of four migrants from the UK as part of the pilot program for the agreement.
The Home Office has emphasized that this move sends a strong message to human trafficking organizations that illegal entry into the UK will not be tolerated. They have vowed to continue detaining and removing those who attempt to enter the country through small boats. While the government hopes that the agreement will dissuade individuals from undertaking perilous journeys across the English Channel, both French and British authorities acknowledge that it may not entirely eliminate the smuggling trade.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is working to disrupt criminal smuggling networks responsible for facilitating these dangerous crossings. However, the pilot program has faced criticism from various quarters. Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp has expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the deal with France, citing concerns about deterrence. Conversely, organizations like Asylum Matters argue that providing safer pathways for seeking refuge is the key to preventing risky journeys.
The “one in, one out” scheme, unveiled in July, entails France taking back migrants whose asylum claims in the UK have been rejected while the UK accepts refugees in need of protection who have not attempted the Channel crossing. Although there have been delays in implementing this process, the UK has successfully returned four individuals who arrived via small boats to France. The total number of crossings in the English Channel this year has decreased slightly from record levels, with more than 30,000 individuals making the journey so far.
