We'll stop Farage turning UK into Trump's America, says Ed Davey

Sir Ed Davey has taken a strong stance against Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party, warning of the potential consequences of Farage’s leadership on the UK. Speaking at the Liberal Democrat conference, Sir Ed painted a bleak picture of what he claimed life would be like under Farage’s government, emphasizing the importance of upholding British values of “tolerance, decency, and respect”.

Arguing that the Lib Dems have a duty to challenge Reform and represent the “decent silent majority” of Britain, Sir Ed called on his party to embrace patriotism. He criticized Labour for failing to deliver the change people had desired and urged Conservatives to join forces with the Lib Dems in the fight against Farage.

During his speech, Sir Ed mentioned Farage 31 times and accused him of seeking to transform Britain into a “Trump-inspired country”. He highlighted concerns such as potential increases in health insurance costs, environmental damage from fracking, and withdrawal from the European Convention on Human Rights under Farage’s leadership. Sir Ed warned against allowing the UK to become “Farage’s Britain” resembling “Trump’s America”.

Looking ahead to the next general election, Sir Ed outlined his ambition for the Lib Dems to surpass the Conservatives, framing it as a “battle of ideas for the future of our country”. While light on specific policy details, he positioned the Lib Dems as the home for those who reject the divisive approach of current Conservative leadership. Sir Ed emphasized the values of tolerance, decency, and respect, asserting that Britain should offer discounted visas to US cancer scientists impacted by the Trump administration’s policies
