In Essex, a man named Hadush Kebatu has been sentenced to a year in prison for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and a woman. The incidents took place in Epping on July 7 and 8, where Kebatu was found guilty of inappropriate touching and attempting to kiss the schoolgirl. His stay at The Bell Hotel as an asylum seeker from Ethiopia sparked protests outside the establishment.
During his trial, it was revealed that Kebatu had arrived in the UK just eight days prior by small boat, after traveling through several countries. The judge at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court described the experience as “disgusting and sickening” for the young girl. Despite Kebatu’s barrister expressing his desire to be deported swiftly, a deportation order, as stipulated by the UK Borders Act 2007, must be issued due to his custodial sentence.
Testimonies from witnesses described Kebatu’s attempts to engage in inappropriate behavior with the girl and her friend, with unsettling remarks about childbearing. Kebatu, who claimed to be a teacher of sports in Ethiopia, was noted to have shown a “significant risk of reoffending” by the judge.
