Families accuse care home of 'neglect' and 'cruelty' after secret filming

Another resident on the same floor frequently soiled themselves, with their clothes and bedding left unchanged for hours at a time.

The cleanliness of the home was also a concern. Communal areas were often dirty, with spilt food left on tables and floors for hours or even days. Toilets were sometimes left unflushed or with faeces on the floors.

Castlehill, run by Four Seasons Health Care, said it took the welfare of residents very seriously and strived to deliver the highest standards of care.

The Care Inspectorate said it had taken enforcement action against the home since 2021 and continued to have concerns about the quality of care being provided. It has also taken enforcement action following the latest complaints.

A Four Seasons Health Care spokesperson said: “The home has had its challenges, particularly during the pandemic, and there have been occasions on which the standards of care have fallen short of what we expect. We are committed to ongoing improvement.”

Susan Christie is sharing her story with the hope that others will speak out if they have concerns about a loved one’s care in a care home.

“If people don’t have families that can fight for them, what happens to them?” she said.

“In the absence of that, there should be systems in place to protect individuals.”

“You can’t just leave people to rot. They deserve better.”
