A fire broke out in a three-storey block of flats in north London, resulting in three children being hospitalized. The incident occurred in Maybury Close, Enfield, where the entire roof and most of the second floor were engulfed in flames. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) reported that 14 individuals managed to evacuate the building before their arrival, with the children suffering from smoke inhalation. More than 70 firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, which was initially reported at 05:19 BST. Crews from various stations in north London and Hertfordshire were deployed to the scene.
Vicky Gardner, a resident near the flats, recounted the alarming events that unfolded. She noted, “I was leaving the house to walk my dogs at 5:15 when I noticed flames coming from the flats at the end of the street.” Gardner further mentioned that a neighbor took it upon themselves to alert the residents by knocking on doors, leading to an evacuation before the fire brigade arrived. This swift action may have played a crucial role in preventing further escalation of the fire.
The LFB was quick to respond to the emergency, with the fire being brought under control within approximately four hours. Notably, this was not the first time emergency services had been alerted to the block of flats. Just the day before, they had responded to a false fire alarm at the same location. The unfortunate incident has left residents devastated, with Gardner expressing empathy for those affected, stating, “Really horrible for the residents, those poor people have lost everything.”
Images captured at the scene depict the severity of the fire, showcasing a three-storey red-brick block of flats with the roof and top floor severely damaged. The presence of yellow hazard tape and debris scattered around the area highlights the aftermath of the destructive blaze. The efforts of the firefighters and emergency services are commendable in their swift response to the incident, ensuring the safety and well-being of those involved
