116-year-old Ethel Caterham, the world’s oldest person, received a visit from King Charles III, who humorously reminisced about how “all the girls were in love with you and wanted to marry you.” Mrs. Caterham, the last surviving subject of Edward VII, resides in a care home in Lightwater, Surrey. Following the passing of Brazilian nun Sister Inah Canbarro Lucas at the age of 116, Mrs. Caterham took on the title of the oldest living person in April.
Born on 21 August 1909, Mrs. Caterham has witnessed significant historical events such as the Russian Revolution, the Great Depression, two world wars, and the Covid-19 pandemic. On her 115th birthday, King Charles sent her a letter acknowledging her incredible milestone. During the visit, Mrs. Caterham fondly recalled the Prince of Wales investiture in 1969 at Caernarfon Castle, where she remarked on the King’s popularity among young women.
Having resided in Surrey for over 50 years, Mrs. Caterham continued to drive until the age of 97. Her granddaughter, Kate Henderson, playfully teased the King about his former popularity among women, to which he responded with good humor. Born in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire, Mrs. Caterham moved to India at 18, working as an au pair until she was 21. Meeting her future husband Norman at a dinner party in 1931, the couple went on to raise two daughters and enjoy the company of three granddaughters and five great-grandchildren
