Aston Villa v Liverpool: Women's Super League match postponed following Matt Beard's death

Liverpool’s Women’s Super League match against Aston Villa has been postponed in light of the tragic death of former manager Matt Beard. Beard, aged 47, had previously led Liverpool to consecutive WSL titles in 2013 and 2014, and had recently returned for a second stint in 2021. Aston Villa released a statement expressing their condolences and understanding for the postponement of the match, highlighting the need to prioritize the well-being of the Liverpool players during this difficult time.

Beard’s managerial career began in 2008 with Millwall Lionesses, where he achieved promotion in his first season. He went on to manage Chelsea, leading them to an FA Cup final during his three-year tenure. His most successful spell came with Liverpool, where he clinched back-to-back WSL titles and managed the team in their first Champions League campaign. Beard also had coaching stints with Boston Breakers in the United States, as well as West Ham and Bristol City in England.

Upon his return to Liverpool in 2021, Beard guided the team to promotion back to the WSL and secured a seventh-placed finish the following season. Prior to his untimely passing, he had a brief stint with Burnley. As a mark of respect, Burnley’s Women’s National League match against West Brom has also been postponed. The Women’s Super League announced that a minute’s silence will be observed before kick-off in all the games taking place in both the WSL and WSL2.

In a heartfelt tribute, Liverpool described Beard as an “extremely committed and successful manager” known for his integrity and warmth. The League Managers’ Association chief executive praised Beard as a true champion of women’s football, highlighting his significant contributions to the professionalization of the game over the past 15 years. Former Chelsea manager Emma Hayes also paid homage to Beard’s investment in women’s football, emphasizing his impact on players, staff, and colleagues across the sport. Beard’s passing leaves a significant void in the women’s game, as his legacy as a dedicated and charismatic figure in football is remembered by many
