Two newspapers have obtained an email reportedly sent by Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, where she referred to him as a “supreme friend” despite his past actions. The Sun and the Mail on Sunday disclosed that the email, dated 2011, came after the duchess had publicly distanced herself from Epstein, who was a disgraced financier at the time.
The spokesperson for the duchess, who was previously married to the Duke of York, explained that the email was a response to Epstein threatening to sue her for defamation. In 2011, during an interview, the duchess acknowledged that her association with Epstein was a “gigantic error of judgment” and vowed never to have any further interactions with him, denouncing paedophilia and sexual abuse of children.
Epstein had served time in jail for soliciting prostitution from a minor three years prior to the email exchange. After the interview, the Duchess of York allegedly reached out to Epstein, denying the use of the word “paedophilia” when referring to him and trying to address the reported misunderstanding. She expressed regret for letting him down and acknowledged his generosity and friendship towards her and her family.
The spokesperson reiterated that the duchess regretted her previous association with Epstein and was guided by the advice she received to address his threats of defamation. Despite trying to appease him in the email, the duchess made it clear that she stood by her public condemnation of Epstein and his actions. Epstein, a well-connected financier and convicted sex offender, passed away in 2019 by suicide while awaiting trial for sex trafficking charges
