RAF jets recently participated in a Nato air defence mission over Poland in response to Russian drone incursions into Polish airspace. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that RAF Typhoon jets were sent to bolster Nato’s eastern flank following escalating tensions due to repeated Russian violations of Nato members’ airspace. A drone was detected over Romania, followed by warplanes in Estonia’s airspace, and then incursions into Poland. Despite Russia denying or downplaying these violations, Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized that the RAF flights sent a strong message that Nato airspace will be defended.
The mission, known as Eastern Sentry, was announced by Nato on September 10 after 19 drone incursions into Polish airspace were detected. Two RAF fighter jets took off from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire to patrol Poland’s skies, accompanied by an RAF Voyager air-to-air refuelling aircraft. They returned to the UK the following day. Healey visited RAF Brize Norton to confirm the UK’s involvement in the mission, condemning Russia’s actions as reckless, dangerous, and unprecedented. He stressed the importance of a collective response when allies are threatened.
The RAF operation comes in the 85th year after the Battle of Britain, where Polish pilots fought alongside the RAF against sustained German air attacks during World War Two. Healey expressed the significance of RAF pilots and crew once again standing alongside Poland for shared security. Chief of the Air Staff, Marshal Harv Smyth, highlighted the strength of the UK’s partnership with Nato, emphasizing their readiness to project airpower at range. The successful mission underscored the commitment to defending allies from any aggression, showcasing the united front against threats to Nato airspace.
In a display of solidarity and military prowess, the joint effort between Nato and the RAF reinforces the message that any violations of airspace will not be tolerated. The participation of British pilots and air crew in the Nato mission demonstrates a clear determination to protect the sovereignty of member states from any hostile actions. Despite the challenges posed by the recent incursions, Nato remains resolute in its defense of Eastern Europe and the commitment to upholding security in the region. The successful operation not only showcases the military capabilities of Nato and its allies but also serves as a reminder of the historical alliances that continue to shape international cooperation in times of need
