New market to head to iconic Chinatown

In the heart of Liverpool’s historic Chinatown, a new market is set to debut, bringing a vibrant and diverse atmosphere to the iconic area. The trial run of this market will commence on Sunday, 28 September, starting at the grand arch – the largest of its kind outside of China – and extending down Nelson Street. Operating from 10am to 4pm, the market will feature approximately 40 stalls offering an array of street food, handmade crafts, unique goods, and community activities. Attendees can anticipate a lively setting with entertainment for all ages, including local artisans and a cutting-edge “Roboshop” showcasing advanced Chinese technology from PIX Moving Co., Ltd, a renowned global company.

In addition to providing a new experience for visitors, the market aims to shine a spotlight on Chinatown’s existing businesses and eateries, encouraging exploration of the area and the potential discovery of hidden gems. This trial market is part of a broader initiative to support and revitalize Liverpool’s Chinatown, enriching its visitor economy and cultural heritage. If successful, organizers hope to establish this market as a regular feature in the neighborhood. Concurrently, the African Routes 2025: Equal Measures festival will be taking place at the Black-E, a free event celebrating Black dance traditions while also examining the impact of societal inequality on well-being.

Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing & Culture, Councillor Harry Doyle, expressed enthusiasm for the new market, emphasizing its role in fostering community spirit and supporting local businesses in Chinatown. Ming Wang, Secretary General of the Liverpool Chinese Business Association, highlighted the event as a celebration of heritage, enterprise, and collaborative spirit in Chinatown. Cathy Guo, owner of China City on Nelson Street, conveyed excitement for the market’s arrival, expressing hopes for its regularity and its potential to bring the community together, attracting more individuals to experience the charm of Chinatown
