Plant-based diet reduces risk of cognitive decline

A plant-based diet is linked to a 14% lower risk of cognitive decline, according to a new study.

A team from the University of Edinburgh analysed the eating habits of over 100,000 people aged 50-80 and found that those who adhered most closely to a Mediterranean or DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet had the lowest risk of cognitive decline.

The Mediterranean diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish and olive oil, while DASH promotes whole grains, lean proteins and vegetables.

“The impact of diet on memory and thinking skills may be influenced by genetic factors, age or education level,” said study leader Dr Drew Dickson. “We’re currently exploring how different dietary patterns may interact with these factors.”

The study, which is the largest of its kind, adds weight to the growing evidence that what we eat can have a significant impact on our brain health.
