James McMurdock investigated over alleged racial abuse on X

An investigation is currently underway regarding allegations of racial abuse against a Sky News journalist by a former Reform UK MP, James McMurdock. McMurdock, who represents South Basildon and East Thurrock in Essex, allegedly made a post on X that included a racial slur. Despite the accusations, a spokesperson for McMurdock dismissed the incident as a “typo” and criticized those who were offended by the post as the “tofu eating wokerati.”

The Parliamentary standards commissioner is looking into whether McMurdock violated the House of Commons code of conduct, particularly rule 11, which pertains to actions that could harm the reputation of the House of Commons or its members. McMurdock, who was elected for Reform UK in July 2024, decided to suspend himself following allegations related to pandemic loans. He currently serves as an independent MP.

Conservative MP Ben Obese-Jecty reported McMurdock to the standards commissioner after the incident where McMurdock posted the letter “N” in response to a critical post about Sky News correspondent Mhari Aurora. Obese-Jecty described this act as a way of using racial slurs online under the guise of circumventing moderation. McMurdock has labeled Obese-Jecty’s actions as having “nothing better to do” and denied posting the offensive letter.

Obese-Jecty criticized McMurdock for deleting his post and not standing up against inappropriate behavior. He expressed shock at the alleged use of racial abuse online, especially coming from a fellow Member of Parliament. In response, McMurdock pointed to Grok, an AI chatbot, as evidence that he did not post the offending letter. He also accused Obese-Jecty of attempting to use the situation for personal gain, calling it “pathetic.” McMurdock’s spokesperson defended him, stating that the incident was a typo and expressing hope for a swift resolution from the commissioner
