Eluned Morgan rejects Donald Trump state banquet invite

The Welsh government cited the recent passing of Caerphilly Senedd member Hefin David as the reason for Morgan’s absence, stating that she wanted to support her colleagues during this difficult time.

Conservative Senedd leader Darren Millar expressed disappointment at Morgan’s decision, calling it a “snub” to the United States. Discussions on eliminating tariffs on UK steel have been paused, with US officials raising concerns about Tata’s shift to new electric arc furnaces by 2027. Despite congratulating President Trump on his re-election in the past and acknowledging the value of the US-Wales relationship, Morgan had previously described Trump as “off-the-scale crazy” in a BBC Wales interview from 2017. Additionally, other high-profile leaders, such as the Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey and Plaid Cymru leaders Rhun ap Iorwerth and Liz Saville Roberts, have made decisions regarding attending the state banquet based on different reasons, including concerns over humanitarian issues
