A man named Thomas Kwan has been removed from his position as a doctor for attempting to murder his mother’s partner in a dispute over inheritance. Kwan, who posed as a community nurse giving a Covid-19 booster shot, injected Patrick O’Hara with poison in Newcastle back in January 2024. Following his admission of attempted murder, Kwan was sentenced to over 31 years in prison.
During a virtual tribunal where Kwan participated via telephone from HMP Frankland, the General Medical Council (GMC) argued that Kwan was unfit to continue practicing medicine. Despite Kwan’s claims that his actions were not related to his medical work, the panel found him unsuitable to be a doctor due to his lack of remorse and ethical breaches within the profession.
Kwan’s elaborate scheme involved setting up a fake appointment at O’Hara’s home, where he would later inject him with a toxin. This criminal act was carefully planned, with Kwan even booking a hotel in Newcastle under false information and using fake number plates on his car. The victim suffered serious medical consequences and had to undergo reconstructive surgery as a result of Kwan’s actions.
The tribunal highlighted that Kwan’s exploitation of his medical knowledge to commit the crime was evident. Despite Kwan’s attempts to downplay his actions and shift blame to the victim, the panel emphasized his lack of insight and remorse. While Kwan expressed regrets for his behavior, he chose not to contest the decision to remove him from the medical register
