Southern Trust: IT issues affecting services at Craigavon and Daisy Hill

A pair of major hospitals are currently experiencing ‘significant’ IT issues, impacting patients’ access to services within the Southern Health Trust. Both Craigavon and Daisy Hill hospitals are affected by these technical problems, leading to ambulances being redirected while efforts are made to address the issues. Emergency and critically ill patients are being given priority during this period of disruption, as confirmed by the trust.

The trust has issued a statement advising all patients against attending any appointments at hospitals or community services under its jurisdiction on Wednesday. Patients are urged to refrain from visiting any of the trust’s facilities, although visiting loved ones is still allowed. The Southern Health Trust oversees a range of hospitals and care centers in counties Tyrone, Armagh, and Down, encompassing South Tyrone Hospital, Lurgan Hospital, St Luke’s Hospital, and others in addition to Craigavon and Daisy Hill hospitals.

Justin McNulty, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Newry and Armagh, conveyed concerns about the distress caused by the disruption to numerous patients. While acknowledging the challenging situation, McNulty emphasized the importance of remaining calm as efforts continue to resolve the issues. He underscored the necessity of investigating the root cause of the problems and implementing preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.

Colin McGrath, a member of Stormont’s health committee, stressed the crucial need for ‘clear’ and consistent communication with the public in the aftermath of the IT outage. Highlighting the significance of ensuring patients do not feel anxious or uncertain about their healthcare, McGrath, representing the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) for South Down, called on the trust to promptly reschedule any lost or delayed appointments. He expressed intentions to address the matter with the health minister to prevent such disruptions from occurring again, underscoring the trust and reliability patients place in the healthcare system during times of need
